Introduction
Hussein Chalayan is a Cypriot-born British designer, artist and educator whose career has moved across fashion, film, performance, product and exhibition-making. Born in Nicosia in 1970, he studied fashion and clothing at Warwickshire School of Arts before entering Central Saint Martins in 1989 and graduating with First Class Honours in 1993. His graduation collection, The Tangent Flows, used garments treated with iron filings and buried for several weeks; Browns acquired and displayed the work. After a brief period with Savile Row tailor Timothy Everest, Chalayan began producing his own commercial collections in March 1994.
The Hussein Chalayan label developed from London Fashion Week into an international ready-to-wear house whose seasonal work combined exact tailoring with material transformation, moving structures, film and spatial staging. Chalayan also served as design consultant to TSE from 1998 to 2001, began showing his own collections in Paris with Medea for Spring/Summer 2002, and launched menswear in 2002. Puma appointed him Creative Director in 2008 with responsibility for Sport Fashion footwear, apparel and accessories; his work there included Urban Mobility and other Puma fashion lines. He later designed two Vionnet demi-couture collections in 2014 and joined Vionnet’s ready-to-wear design team in 2015, and remained involved with its ready-to-wear team through at least June 2016.
Teaching and interdisciplinary work have remained integral to Chalayan’s later career. He was Professor and Head of the Fashion Class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna from 2014 to 2019 and joined HTW Berlin as a Fashion Design professor in late 2019. His theatrical work Gravity Fatigue, created with choreographer Damien Jalet, premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 2015; subsequent activity has included exhibitions in Shanghai and Istanbul, furniture with Boloni, painting, film screenings and a 2024 clothing and accessory commission for Zeyrek Çinili Hamam. The Chalayan seasonal runway cycle stopped after Autumn/Winter 2020, while Chalayan has remained active through design, art and education.
Design ethos
Chalayan treats clothing as a structure whose meaning emerges through material, movement and the body’s occupation of space. His early work used corrosion, paper, rigid supports, balloons and portable constructions to make time, fragility and displacement physically legible. Precision cutting remains the quieter constant underneath those experiments: tailored coats, dresses, shirts and trousers give the conceptual elements a wearable framework and keep the wardrobe central even in collections remembered for a single spectacular object.
Technology enters his work as a material capability with a defined theatrical purpose. Motorised dresses in One Hundred and Eleven, LED and video garments in Airborne, laser-and-crystal structures in Readings, dissolving outer dresses for Spring/Summer 2016 and devices developed with Intel for Spring/Summer 2017 each required specialist collaborators. Chalayan retains fashion authorship while engineers, fabricators and digital specialists solve specific mechanical, electronic or material problems. The resulting objects make change visible through folding, illumination, projection, dissolution or controlled transformation.
Geography, migration and cultural memory recur through the same structural discipline. Cyprus appears through maps, divided territories and personal movement; Japanese isolation and opening informed Sakoku and Kaikoku; later collections addressed peripheral cities, post-colonial bodies and songlines. Chalayan translates those subjects through silhouette, seam, surface, choreography and spatial design, allowing clothes, film, furniture and performance to share one vocabulary without reducing the fashion work to illustration.

Career history
2025
Hussein Chalayan presented Anaesthetics and joined a public discussion at Gropius Bau in December 2025 in his capacity as an HTW Berlin professor. The event returned an earlier film work to an institutional setting and continued the link between his academic role and interdisciplinary practice.
2024
HTW Berlin published Digital Skin in November 2024, documenting an HTW and MIT class instigated by Hussein Chalayan. The project extended his current teaching into collaborative work on fashion, technology and the body and confirmed an active academic practice after the end of the seasonal runway cycle.
2024
Zeyrek Çinili Hamam commissioned Hussein Chalayan to design clothing and accessories for guests, staff and retail as the restored Istanbul bath reopened in 2024. 2024
The Other Side opened at PİLEVNELİ Dolapdere in Istanbul in March 2024 as Hussein Chalayan’s first exhibition devoted to painting and drawing. The show extended his post-seasonal practice into a medium outside clothing, film and performance and retained his interest in bodies, environments and constructed narratives.
2022
Hussein Chalayan: Souffleur opened at Sakıp Sabancı Museum in Istanbul in September 2022 and ran through January 2023. The exhibition brought together installations and moving-image work including Pre-tension, Fake Celebrations, Post-Colonial Body and a film of Gravity Fatigue.
2021
Hussein Chalayan: Archipelago opened at the Power Station of Art’s design centre in Shanghai in December 2021 and ran into February 2022. The exhibition gathered Chalayan’s interdisciplinary practice in the first years after the seasonal house had stopped operating on a continuous runway calendar.
2020
Hussein Chalayan collaborated with Boloni across 2020–21 on furniture and interior-product work including Ode to the Tribe and Secrets. The collaboration carried his attention to movement, domestic space and adaptable structures into furniture during the transition away from a continuous runway calendar.

2014
Vionnet appointed Hussein Chalayan to design its demi-couture line in January 2014 under owner and creative director Goga Ashkenazi. He completed two documented demi-couture collections that year, bringing his technical cutting and controlled experimentation into Vionnet’s revived couture-adjacent structure.
2013
Hussein Chalayan’s Puma Creative Director mandate ended around 2013 after approximately five years. No formal departure announcement has been recovered, so the endpoint remains approximate and is bounded by institutional biographies and surviving product activity.

2001
Chalayan’s TSE consultancy ended before the agreement’s stated 31 May 2001 expiry. By mid-March he had completed his final TSE collection, closing a three-year external design role that had run alongside his own London practice.
1998
Trade reporting in October 1998 announced an extension of Chalayan’s TSE agreement through 2001. The renewed mandate confirmed the consultancy as a sustained part of his career and preserved a clear separation between TSE collections and his eponymous house.
1998
TSE hired Hussein Chalayan as Design Consultant in 1998 to develop the New York company’s fashion sportswear and ready-to-wear offer. His first TSE collection was shown in New York at the end of March, beginning a parallel design role that continued alongside his own label.

Hussein Chalayan received the first Absolut Creation award in 1995 during the label’s early London phase. The recognition added material support and public visibility as the house developed its first sequence of commercial collections.
1994
Hussein Chalayan began producing his own commercial collections in March 1994 under the Hussein Chalayan label, with Cartesia Ltd. serving as the operating company. London became the base for a practice built around precise cutting, material transformation and the relation of clothing to surrounding space.
