Introduction
Jean-Claude Colban joined Charvet in the early 1980s after working in banking, entering the house during the period in which it moved to its current 28 place Vendôme premises. He is the son of Denis Colban, who had acquired controlling stock in Charvet in 1965, and became one of the two principal family leaders after Denis’s death in 1994.
His role combines general management with sustained attention to the house’s textiles and product development. He has served as directeur général of CHARVET PLACE VENDOME since 16 January 2002 and of ATELIERS CHARVET since 2006. His work also includes the development of patterns and fabric combinations, with recurring cycles adding hundreds of new proposals to a large archive of exclusive shirtings and silks.
Jean-Claude remained directeur général after Chanel acquired Charvet in July 2026. The transaction followed a recurring shirtmaking relationship with Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel, beginning with Spring/Summer 2026. His continued presence after the sale links the current Chanel-owned structure to the Colban-era fabric system, Place Vendôme service and Saint-Gaultier manufacturing network.
Design ethos
Jean-Claude Colban works through fabric as the principal variable inside Charvet’s stable wardrobe. Stripe scale, colour relationships, weave, handle and finish are developed in dense combinations, giving customers thousands of possibilities without requiring a seasonal reinvention of the shirt itself.
This textile direction is joined to an exact service hierarchy. Prêt-à-porter, demi-mesure and sur-mesure allow different degrees of individualisation, while the full custom shirt is developed from measurements and a personal pattern before cutting in Paris and assembly at Saint-Gaultier. The garment remains disciplined enough for small shifts in cloth and proportion to register clearly.
His approach favours long-term accumulation over rapid replacement. New fabrics enter an extensive living archive, familiar collars and cuffs remain available, and tailoring, neckwear and nightwear extend the same material sensibility across the wardrobe. The result is a house language built through depth of choice and continuity of execution.
