Introduction
Jeffrey Kalinsky is an American fashion merchant, retailer and creative executive, born on 2 August 1962 in Charleston, South Carolina. He grew up in his father Morris Kalinsky’s Bob Ellis shoe business and built his career through buying and retail roles at Bonwit Teller, Bergdorf Goodman, Donna Karan and Barneys New York before returning south to establish his own store.
Kalinsky opened his first Atlanta retail business in 1990 and developed Jeffrey into one of the defining American specialty boutiques of the 1990s and 2000s, adding New York in 1999 and later Palo Alto. Nordstrom acquired a majority stake in 2005, and Kalinsky remained a senior merchant and fashion director until the Jeffrey stores closed in 2020. Theory appointed him Chief Merchant and Creative Officer in March 2022, giving him responsibility across merchandising, product design and the design teams until his final working day on 12 April 2024.
In August 2026, Kalinsky reopened Jeffrey in Atlanta on his birthday, returning to independent specialty retail with a tightly edited womenswear, accessories and footwear offer. The relaunch reconnects his current work with the service-driven, highly personal merchandising model that established his reputation decades earlier.
Design ethos
Kalinsky’s creative authority begins with selection. He treats merchandising as authorship, building a point of view through proportion, fabrication, price, styling and the relationship between a garment and the customer who will live in it. Service and personal trust are integral parts of that system.
At Theory, he translated the same merchant discipline into design leadership. His collections focused on the modern uniform, fabric, fit and seven-day dressing, with narrated runway presentations making the product logic unusually explicit. The work connected retail observation directly to the design studio.

Career history
2024
Jeffrey Kalinsky worked his final day at Theory on 12 April 2024 after giving notice on 29 March. His exit ended the combined merchant-and-creative leadership role, and the brand subsequently operated through its named womenswear and menswear category heads.
2022
Theory appointed Jeffrey Kalinsky Chief Merchant and Creative Officer on 4 March 2022 in a newly created role spanning merchandising, product design and oversight of the design teams. His tenure joined customer-led merchant strategy to whole-brand creative governance and restored a regular narrated runway cycle.
