Introduction
John Ray is a Scottish designer associated with Gucci menswear during the transition after Tom Ford. He worked within Gucci’s studio before being appointed menswear creative director in 2004, when the house divided responsibilities among Ray, Alessandra Facchinetti and Frida Giannini.
Ray directed Gucci menswear through 2005 and resigned in January 2006. His departure allowed Giannini, already responsible for accessories and womenswear, to become sole creative director.
Design ethos
Ray’s Gucci menswear used precise tailoring, narrow proportions and polished sportswear within the established luxury vocabulary of the house. The work depended on continuity of product and finish during a period without one house-wide author.
His role is best understood as category leadership inside a distributed studio. It preserved a distinct menswear responsibility while Gucci tested an alternative to the single creative-director model.
