Introduction
Jules François Crahay was a Belgian couturier whose work at Nina Ricci preceded a two-decade tenure at Lanvin. Contracted in March 1963 and active by late that year, he presented his first Lanvin haute-couture collection for Spring/Summer 1964.
Crahay led women’s couture through Autumn/Winter 1984–85 and women’s ready-to-wear from 1965 to Spring/Summer 1982. His Lanvin period encompassed new retail and manufacturing structures, artist textiles and three Dé d’or awards before the final Viva America collection in July 1984.
Design ethos
Crahay combined couture construction with colour, folk dress, historicist form and textile collaboration. Pleating, wrapped volume, embroidery and patterned surface allowed youthful shapes to coexist with formal eveningwear for the established Lanvin clientele.
The archive entered his work through transformation rather than reproduction. Founder-era doll-like proportion, Poiret reference and wide cultural sources were reworked across couture and manufactured ready-to-wear, with Eduardo Paolozzi’s Spring/Summer 1971 textiles providing the clearest artist collaboration.

The 2024 Brussels exhibition Jules François Crahay — Back in the Spotlight brought museum, house and private holdings together to reconstruct the designer’s long Lanvin tenure and its surviving object record.
1984
Crahay closed his Lanvin tenure with Viva America in July 1984, his final couture collection and third Dé d’or. The collection belongs in the Collections CMS; this row records the end of his institutional mandate.
1965
Lanvin reduced its couture programme in 1965 and extended Crahay’s authority into manufactured women’s ready-to-wear. Maria Carine handled production, separating design direction from manufacturing.
1963
Lanvin contracted Jules François Crahay in March 1963 and he became operational by late that year. His Spring/Summer 1964 couture debut began a tenure spanning couture through 1984 and ready-to-wear from 1965 to Spring/Summer 1982.
