Introduction
Julie de Libran is a French designer educated at Istituto Marangoni and the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Her early career included Gianfranco Ferré, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Versace, followed by a decade at Prada and senior womenswear responsibility at Louis Vuitton. Those roles developed her across draping, ready-to-wear studios and the coordination of large seasonal collections.
She was appointed Artistic Director of Sonia Rykiel on 14 May 2014, with responsibility for womenswear, accessories, childrenswear, home and the remaining diffusion business. Her five-year tenure reintroduced stripes, open knits and Saint-Germain-des-Prés references, while the 2015 book-lined flagship connected clothes, publishing and the house’s Left Bank setting. She left on 14 March 2019 in a contested departure during the company’s financial collapse.
De Libran launched her eponymous Paris practice in June 2019. Its made-to-order collections use couture construction and deadstock materials, shifting her work from the scale of corporate seasonal production to a closer relationship with clients, existing cloth and limited manufacture.
Design ethos
De Libran works through drape, wardrobe familiarity and controlled ease. Her experience at Prada and Louis Vuitton gave her a precise grasp of the studio system; at Sonia Rykiel she used that structure to restore fishnet knits, lettering, stripes and relaxed tailoring without making the archive a literal costume. The result favoured Parisian movement and an intentionally unfinished polish.
Her independent label narrows production around made-to-order work, deadstock and couture technique. Across both scales, she treats existing material and inherited codes as working matter: cloth is recut, familiar forms are adjusted, and decorative effects remain attached to how the garment falls and is worn.
