Introduction
Jun Takahashi is the founder of the Japanese label Undercover and a central figure in the Harajuku ‘Ura-Harajuku’ movement. A graduate of Bunka Fashion College, he rose to international prominence after his Paris debut in 2002. Takahashi is often regarded as the spiritual successor to Rei Kawakubo, known for his ability to bridge the gap between high fashion and subversive street subcultures.
His career is marked by a relentless pursuit of creative independence and a willingness to explore dark, intellectual themes through clothing. Undercover has become a cult brand, celebrated for its innovative designs and its role in defining the avant-garde aesthetic of contemporary Japanese fashion.
Design ethos
The exploration of duality—specifically the tension between beauty and destruction—is a recurring theme in the work. This is articulated through the motto ‘We Make Noise, Not Clothes’, which reflects a commitment to subversive concepts and the blending of punk culture with high-fashion construction. The silhouette often incorporates deconstructed elements and surrealist details, drawing inspiration from science fiction, film, and visual art.
Garments are designed to challenge conventional expectations, frequently featuring highly complex layers and unexpected material combinations. There is a persistent focus on the ‘creativity’ of everyday wear, where utilitarian pieces are infused with a sense of rebellion and intellectual provocation. By maintaining this balance between the raw energy of the street and the refinement of the runway, the aesthetic creates a unique dialogue between Japanese subculture and the global fashion landscape.
