Introduction
Kostas Murkudis is a German fashion designer of Greek parentage, born in Dresden in 1959. He moved from chemistry studies into fashion and joined Helmut Lang’s Vienna studio in 1985, when Lang was preparing his first Paris presentation. Murkudis remained until 1992, making him the earliest securely named design assistant in the founder studio during the transition from a local Vienna practice to an international house.
After leaving Lang, Murkudis established his own label and presented men’s and women’s collections in Paris, with a sustained runway period documented from the mid-1990s into 2001. He later held creative-director roles at New York Industrie, Closed, Ter et Bantine and Hache and consulted for houses including Balenciaga and Pringle of Scotland. These appointments placed his precise, material-led vocabulary across both independent and established fashion structures.
Murkudis has continued to work across clothing, objects and collaborations, including eyewear, leather goods and knitwear. A major solo exhibition at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt in 2015 treated his garments and objects as a body of design work, and his namesake activity has remained the centre of his independent practice in the years since.
Design ethos
Murkudis builds clothing from cut, fabric and the disciplined adjustment of familiar garment types. Tailoring, workwear, leather and knitwear recur with little decorative excess, and the silhouette is usually established through proportion, weight and surface before graphic detail enters.
His years with Helmut Lang coincided with the formation of a house language based on exact construction and ordinary wardrobe forms placed under new pressure. Murkudis carried that fluency into his own collections, where restrained colour, tactile materials and carefully engineered garments could move across men’s and women’s wardrobes and retain structural clarity.
Across later appointments and collaborations, he has kept the object itself at the centre: a coat, shoe, bag or pair of glasses is resolved through material and use. The consistency comes from reduction, finish and close control of proportion, giving the work a quiet severity even when it enters a different brand vocabulary.
