Introduction
Kunihiko Morinaga is a Japanese fashion designer and the founder of Anrealage, a label established in 2003 that has become a leading name in experimental fashion. Born in Kunitachi in 1980, he was educated at Waseda University and the Vantan Design Institute. His brand name is a portmanteau of the words 'real,' 'unreal,' and 'age,' reflecting his interest in the shifting boundaries of perception and the intersection of traditional craft and future technology.
Morinaga is celebrated for his pioneering work in fashion technology, particularly his use of smart textiles and digital fabrication. His collections frequently debut at Paris Fashion Week, where he is recognised for challenging the fundamental structures of garment construction. By integrating scientific concepts into his design process, he has established himself as a forward-thinking innovator whose work bridges the gap between the physical and the digital worlds.
Design ethos
Science and technology serve as the primary drivers for a design methodology that explores the threshold between the ordinary and the extraordinary. The work is defined by the use of photochromic fabrics that undergo colour transformation when exposed to light, as well as the integration of 3D-printed elements and complex geometric silhouettes. These technical innovations are not merely decorative but are used to challenge traditional ideas of form and the relationship between the garment and its environment.
Mathematical concepts and optical illusions frequently inform the construction of the silhouette, resulting in garments that change shape or appearance based on the viewer’s perspective. This analytical approach to fashion prioritises the 'unreal' aspects of design, using advanced engineering to subvert the expectations of everyday wardrobing. By focusing on the structural possibilities of new materials, the designs offer a rigorous critique of conventional fashion cycles, favouring a conceptual exploration of space, light, and time.
