Introduction
Lorenz Bäumer is a jewellery designer and trained engineer who began working on Chanel costume jewellery in 1988. He became the central creative figure in the establishment of Chanel Joaillerie, formalised as a permanent fine-jewellery division in 1993 with a dedicated Place Vendôme boutique.
Bäumer directed Chanel fine jewellery until 2007. His tenure bridged the isolated Bijoux de Diamants exhibition of 1932 and a continuous modern business capable of producing high-jewellery collections under a separate studio structure.
Design ethos
Bäumer applies engineering discipline to jewellery movement, setting and wear. House motifs can be translated into precious materials only when articulation and proportion allow the object to behave against the body.
The work institutionalised reference without treating 1932 as an unbroken tradition. Comets, ribbons and graphic geometry became resources for a new permanent division rather than replicas of a single historical collection.
