Introduction
Ludovic Alban is a French menswear designer and creative director who trained at the École Supérieure des Industries de la Mode in Toulouse from 2000 to 2002, alongside studies in marketing. He began in menswear at Yves Saint Laurent in 2003 during the Tom Ford and Stefano Pilati period, then joined Hermès, working with Véronique Nichanian and developing a specialist understanding of outerwear and leather.
Carven appointed Alban artistic director of Carven Homme in 2008 after the Béranger/SCM acquisition. His authority was confined to menswear, which remained organisationally separate from the women’s relaunch that later brought Guillaume Henry into the house. Alban and Carven Homme separated in February 2010, after which the men’s line paused until Henry received a formal menswear mandate in 2011.
Alban’s later career moved through brands including Look and Chevignon and into independent ventures. He founded the leather-focused Aisthæt project and co-founded Paris Phoenix Studio, later extending his consultancy into the meeting point of fashion and outdoor product. He also teaches and writes about luxury, product identity and creative direction.
Design ethos
Alban’s work is built around menswear product architecture, leather and outerwear. His Hermès experience supplied a craft framework, and later projects pushed that knowledge toward technical materials, sports references and the demands of contemporary use.
He treats creative direction as a combination of product identity and execution across a brand. Material innovation, construction and recognisable function are developed together, especially in leather and outerwear. This systems-minded approach carries from Carven Homme and Chevignon into his independent studio work.
