Introduction
Marie Mazelis is a fashion designer and creative director whose career developed through American contemporary and designer businesses before her long period at Halston Heritage. She held senior creative roles at Max Azria and Hervé Léger, working inside companies where runway image, body-conscious construction and large commercial collections had to operate together. That experience made her a central creative appointment when Halston was reorganised after the departures of Sarah Jessica Parker, Marios Schwab and Harvey Weinstein in 2011.
Mazelis was leading Halston Heritage by 2012 and became the principal designer of the line through a sustained sequence of contemporary collections. The company moved its headquarters to Los Angeles in September 2012, and her work subsequently appeared through presentations and seasonal reviews including Resort 2015, Spring 2015, Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. She treated the Halston archive as an active vocabulary of caftans, jumpsuits, jersey, one-shoulder shapes, Ultrasuede and fluid eveningwear while extending the business into a fuller day-to-evening wardrobe.
By 2016 trade reporting identified Mazelis as chief creative officer of Halston. Her tenure is important because it gave the post-2011 company a comparatively stable design voice during several years of retail expansion and archive-led product development. It also connects the Halston story to the wider Los Angeles contemporary-fashion system in which she had already built much of her career.
Design ethos
Mazelis works through translation of familiar house codes into commercially direct contemporary product. At Halston Heritage she used archival photographs, garments and collaborators as starting points for current silhouettes, extracting a sleeve, square-cut caftan construction, scarf treatment or length and rebuilding it in present materials and proportions. The archive functioned as a design vocabulary that could be recombined season after season.
Her earlier experience at Hervé Léger and Max Azria brought knowledge of fitted knitwear, event dressing and broad ready-to-wear systems. Halston Heritage expanded that background toward looser drape, movement and a wider daytime offer, with jumpsuits, cashmere, shirtdresses and separates carrying the same attention as evening pieces.
The strongest collections balance recognisable Halston fluidity with disciplined merchandising. Surface treatments, metallics, suede, knitwear and soft tailoring create variation inside a stable set of silhouettes, giving the line continuity without relying on literal copies of founder-era garments.
