Introduction
Mark Howard Thomas is a British fashion designer whose career has largely developed across menswear, tailoring and contemporary ready-to-wear. Raised in South East London, he studied at Ravensbourne before completing an MA at Central Saint Martins under Louise Wilson. After graduating, Thomas spent nine years at Neil Barrett in Milan, followed by positions at Givenchy and Joseph, where he served as head of menswear under Louise Trotter.
In 2017, Thomas joined Helmut Lang as creative director of menswear, presenting his first collection for Autumn/Winter 2018 and remaining with the New York label until 2019. He subsequently reunited with Trotter at Lacoste, overseeing menswear and collaborations, before joining her team at Carven in 2023. Following Trotter’s departure, Thomas was promoted to design director in March 2025. His work continued the sophisticated, minimalist and wearable language they had developed together, while introducing a greater emphasis on tailoring, sensuality and the personal history of the house. His first runway collection as Carven’s design director was Spring/Summer 2026. He departed the company at the end of April 2026.
Design ethos
Mark Howard Thomas approaches design through the construction of a considered, wearable wardrobe rather than a sequence of isolated statement pieces. His work is grounded in clarity, restraint and an awareness of how established design codes can be adapted to contemporary life. At Helmut Lang, he emphasised authenticity and elevation, using texture and material contrast to give familiar garments a distinctive presence without abandoning their practical function.
At Carven, this approach developed into a sophisticated and understated womenswear language shaped by ease, subtle sensuality and an attentive reading of the house’s history. Thomas combined clean silhouettes and controlled tailoring with softer fabrics, exposed skin, delicate decoration and occasional eccentric details drawn from Marie-Louise Carven’s world. Rather than treating heritage as a fixed visual formula, his work used it as a source of mood and character, producing clothes intended to feel polished, individual and readily integrated into everyday life.
