Introduction
Meryll Rogge is a Belgian designer who was appointed as the Creative Director of Marni in 2024, following a career defined by her work with some of the industry’s most respected houses. Before launching her namesake label in 2020, she developed her technical and aesthetic sensibilities as the Head of Women’s Design at Dries Van Noten and as a senior designer at Marc Jacobs in New York. Rogge is widely regarded for her ability to balance commercial viability with an idiosyncratic, personal design language.
By establishing her own studio in her native Belgium, she has cultivated an independent spirit that values authenticity and longevity. Her transition to the helm of Marni brings a distinctive perspective to a house known for its intellectual and artistic heritage, merging European craftsmanship with a modern, independent sensibility.
Design ethos
A preoccupation with vintage storytelling and the expressive freedom associated with the 1980s informs the structural and decorative decisions in the collections. The design process is often intuitive, favouring draping and the manipulation of fabric over rigid formal templates. This results in silhouettes that feel both familiar and unexpected, where playful colour palettes are used to subvert the traditional expectations of classic wardrobe staples. The work seeks to create an emotional connection through the use of nostalgic references filtered through a contemporary lens.
The integration of eclectic, personal details serves as a primary signal, contrasting with the uniformity of mass fashion. By mixing disparate influences—from high-fashion history to everyday mundane elements—a visual narrative is constructed that celebrates spontaneity. The emphasis remains on the versatility of the garment, ensuring that even experimental pieces maintain a functional groundedness, allowing the wearer to negotiate their identity through a sophisticated interplay of texture and tone.
