Introduction
Michael Colovos is a Spanish-born American fashion designer who was raised in Seattle and developed an early interest in music, skate culture and clothing. He studied fashion in New York and Italy and co-founded the denim label Habitual with Nicole Colovos, building experience in jeans, fit and contemporary sportswear before the pair were recruited to relaunch Helmut Lang.
Link Theory appointed Nicole and Michael jointly in May 2006. Their first public assignment was a Spring/Summer 2007 capsule, followed by a full contemporary business encompassing women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, resort, denim and accessories. Their joint authorship remained the public centre of the label through Fall/Winter 2014, even as category-specific menswear designers were added during the later years of their tenure.
The pair left Helmut Lang in February 2014 and later founded Colovos in 2016. Michael’s career therefore links three different denim and ready-to-wear structures: an independent early label, the corporate reconstruction of Helmut Lang and a later namesake partnership developed on a smaller scale.
Design ethos
Colovos works from garment engineering and material behaviour, with denim providing an early technical foundation. Fit, wash, weight and construction remain visible in the finished clothes, and tailoring is usually treated with the same pragmatic attention as jeans or outerwear.
At Helmut Lang, Michael and Nicole used those skills to establish a coherent contemporary wardrobe from a newly assembled studio. Leather, layered knits, technical fabrics, narrow trousers and asymmetric jersey became recurring elements. The denim business was repeatedly adjusted as a core commercial category.
His independent work with Nicole has continued this focus on material and reduction. The clothes rely on controlled proportion, surface and utility, with details integrated into the construction and little separation between concept and everyday use.

Career history
2014
Nicole and Michael Colovos stepped down in February 2014 after eight years leading the post-founder relaunch. Their exit ended the first sustained creative-director system established under Link Theory.
2012
The post-founder company launched HELMUT in April 2012 as a lower-priced diffusion line centred on jersey-led wardrobe pieces. Its named identity and pricing structure make it a clear product-line development within the Colovos era.
2006
The first Link Theory-era Helmut Lang capsule was prepared for the Spring/Summer 2007 season and presented to market in September 2006. Nicole and Michael Colovos established a new New York contemporary sportswear operation under the acquired trademark.
2006
Nicole and Michael Colovos were appointed jointly in May 2006 to rebuild Helmut Lang under Link Theory. Their eight-year tenure established the post-founder creative system across ready-to-wear, denim, accessories and the HELMUT diffusion line.
