Introduction
Michel Klein is a French fashion designer who joined Guy Laroche in October 1993 to create haute couture after Angelo Tarlazzi’s departure. His first couture collection appeared in January 1994, at a moment when the house was reorganising its overlapping couture, luxury ready-to-wear and diffusion programmes under BIC ownership.
Klein’s remit expanded in stages. By March 1995 he designed couture and luxury ready-to-wear and had added the Guy Laroche diffusion line; in June he was named artistic director for women’s fashion. The house suspended haute couture on 30 November 1995 and redirected resources toward luxury ready-to-wear. Non-renewal of Klein’s contract was announced in April 1996, although the exact delivery and effective end boundary remains unresolved.
His period should not be reduced to a simple 1993–97 couture directorship. It records an incremental accumulation of authority followed by the closure of the formal couture programme and a transition toward Alber Elbaz’s ready-to-wear relaunch.
Design ethos
Klein’s work at Guy Laroche moved between couture construction and the demands of several women’s ready-to-wear tiers. The role required the same design authority to negotiate atelier output, luxury product and diffusion without treating those categories as interchangeable.
The staged expansion of his remit is part of the design history. Couture supplied technique and image, while ready-to-wear became the house’s commercial priority. His tenure therefore shows a practice shaped by institutional compression as much as by seasonal styling.
