Nishizaki is part of a generation of Japanese designers who have successfully bridged the gap between Tokyo’s avant-garde traditions and the European luxury market. His brand, Ujoh, is celebrated for its precise construction and its modern, intellectual approach to contemporary tailoring.
Design ethos
The design practice is rooted in a profound mastery of pattern-making, focusing on 'intellectual tailoring' that challenges traditional garment structures. This approach involves the deconstruction of classic sartorial codes to create new, asymmetrical silhouettes that often feature unexpected openings and layers. There is a rigorous emphasis on the balance between masculine tailoring and feminine fluidity, resulting in a versatile and sophisticated aesthetic.
The use of high-quality textiles is central to the work, as fabric choice is used to dictate the movement and volume of the architectural cuts. Every collection explores the interplay between the body and the garment, using precise construction techniques to create a sense of effortless complexity. By prioritising the technical integrity of the cut over superficial ornament, the ethos achieves a modern elegance that is defined by structural innovation and refined material handling.
