Introduction
Nigo, born Tomoaki Nagao, is a Japanese designer, entrepreneur, collector and musician. After studying at Bunka Fashion College, he opened the Harajuku shop Nowhere in 1993 and founded A Bathing Ape, building a streetwear system around graphic identity, limited distribution, music and an exact reading of post-war American clothing.
He later established Human Made, whose 'future is in the past' concept applies Japanese manufacture to workwear, military dress, collegiate clothing and everyday objects. His wider career includes Billionaire Boys Club and Icecream with Pharrell Williams, creative direction for Uniqlo UT, collaborations with Louis Vuitton and music as a DJ, producer and member of Teriyaki Boyz.
Nigo became Kenzo's artistic director on 20 September 2021 and debuted at Galerie Vivienne in January 2022. The appointment brought his archive-led method into a Paris house whose founder had attended the same Tokyo school; from 2025 he has also served as creative director of FamilyMart in Japan, extending his work from luxury fashion to a national convenience-store network.
Design ethos
Nigo designs through collecting, classification and material reconstruction. American workwear, varsity clothing, military utility, advertising mascots, records and toys are studied as complete cultural objects, then remade through Japanese fabric, manufacturing and graphic systems.
A Bathing Ape established the scarcity, repetition and recognisable motifs that became central to global streetwear. Human Made shifted the emphasis towards vintage construction, craft and useful objects, while music and collaborations allowed the same visual language to move across clothing, packaging and entertainment.
At Kenzo, founder florals, the boke flower and Japanese construction sit beside washed denim, precise tailoring, souvenir graphics and industrial footwear. The references remain legible rather than dissolving into mood: the method depends on exact objects, controlled collisions and the accumulated knowledge of an archive.

Career history
2026
From 22 to 28 June 2026, Kenzo La Fête extended the house through a sequence of public-facing Paris activations around the Spring/Summer 2027 season. Clothing shown by appointment was joined by installations and events, shifting the seasonal emphasis from a conventional runway to a week-long public presence.
2025
Futura 2000's atom graphics and gestural visual language entered Kenzo's Autumn/Winter 2025–26 menswear runway at the Palais de Chaillot. The collaboration joined New York graffiti history to Nigo's collegiate, military and technical clothing references.

Nigo became creative director of FamilyMart in 2025. The appointment extends his design method beyond fashion houses into the visual identity, products and customer environment of a national Japanese convenience-store network.

Nigo opened his Kenzo tenure with a debut that reset the house through archive, streetwear and Japan–Paris continuity.
2021
Kenzo announced Nigo as artistic director on 15 September 2021, effective 20 September. His appointment reconnected the house to a Japanese designer and introduced an archive-led method shaped by denim, workwear, Ivy style, music and streetwear history.
2013
Uniqlo appointed Nigo as the first creative director of its UT graphic T-shirt line in October 2013, beginning with Spring/Summer 2014 across men's, women's and children's products. The tenure ended by 2022, when Kosuke Kawamura was announced as UT's new creative director.
2010
Nigo established Human Made in 2010 around the concept 'the future is in the past'. He remains the label's designer, translating vintage American workwear, collegiate dress and everyday objects through Japanese materials, manufacturing and graphic systems.
2003

Nigo founded A Bathing Ape in 1993 from the Harajuku shop Nowhere and built the label through graphic identity, limited distribution, music and product collaborations. He left the company in 2013, closing a twenty-year founder-led tenure that helped define the commercial language of global streetwear.
