Introduction
Olivier Rousteing is a French designer who joined Balmain in 2009 with senior responsibility in the women’s design studio. Balmain confirmed his promotion on 28 April 2011 to supervise women’s and men’s ready-to-wear. After a Resort 2012 presentation, his first full runway was Spring–Summer 2012 on 28 September 2011.
Across fourteen years he expanded Balmain through designer-led social media, campaigns, celebrity wardrobes, menswear runway presentation, collaborations and public festival formats. The 2015 H&M project, Spring–Summer 2016 men’s runway, 44 François Premier eveningwear programme, Spring–Summer 2019 couture return, Balmain-Sur-Seine and Renaissance Couture with Beyoncé were distinct projects rather than one undifferentiated house-wide product system.
Rousteing’s final Balmain runway was Spring–Summer 2026 on 1 October 2025; his departure was announced on 5 November. Rabanne appointed him creative director on 14 July 2026, with a first collection planned for March 2027.
Design ethos
Rousteing built a recognisable vocabulary from military tailoring, pronounced shoulders, fitted construction, embroidery, crystal, pearls, graphic pattern, denim and gold hardware. Over time he placed greater emphasis on Pierre Balmain’s archive, atelier labour and couture construction.
His method also treated communication and casting as design infrastructure. Instagram, campaign casts, music collaborations and public festivals widened the runway’s audience, while named partners and licensees retained distinct roles in beauty, eyewear, children’s wear, hair and watches.
