Introduction
Patrizio Bertelli is an Italian entrepreneur and industrial executive who built an Arezzo-centred leather-goods business before forming the operating partnership that transformed Prada. His early companies included businesses known as Sir Robert or Mr. Robert and Granello; in 1977 he consolidated production resources in I.P.I., or I Pellettieri d’Italia.
I.P.I. received a Prada production-and-distribution licence in 1977, made exclusive in January 1984. Bertelli developed the industrial, retail and financial structure that allowed Prada to expand from a family leather-goods concern into footwear, ready-to-wear, directly operated international stores and a multi-brand group, while Miuccia Prada retained institutional fashion authorship.
Bertelli served as Chief Executive Officer and later Co-Chief Executive Officer of Prada S.p.A. He is now Chairman and Executive Director, a co-founder of Fondazione Prada and the initiator of the Prada Challenge that developed into Luna Rossa. These executive, industrial and cultural roles do not constitute a Prada creative-director title.
Design ethos
Bertelli’s working method connects product development to production, distribution and retail. Leather goods and footwear were treated as systems requiring control over materials, prototypes, manufacturing capacity, delivery and store context, rather than as isolated accessories added to a fashion collection.
His contribution to Prada’s creative history is structural. He built the conditions in which design decisions could be repeated at international scale, joined directly operated retail to a recognisable spatial identity and pursued technical projects such as Luna Rossa. Garment authorship remained with Miuccia Prada and the design organisation.
