Introduction
Priscilla Royer is a French designer who became artistic director of Maison Michel in 2015. The millinery house had been acquired by Chanel in 1996 and operates both as a specialist maison d’art and as a ready-to-wear accessories brand.
Royer’s remit connects hat design, workshop technique and seasonal product while the atelier continues to supply Chanel and other clients. The role therefore combines authorship of Maison Michel’s own line with interpretation of external fashion briefs.
Design ethos
Royer works through the architecture of the head: crown, brim, volume and material determine how a hat changes the proportion of a complete look.
Her practice depends on the millinery workroom, where blocking, braiding, felt, straw and hand finishing convert graphic shapes into wearable objects. The distinction between house line and supplier commission remains central.
