Introduction
Rudolphus Ignatius Wilhelmus “Rolf” Snoeren is a Dutch fashion designer and co-founder of Viktor&Rolf. Born in Dongen in 1969, he studied fashion at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design from 1988 to 1992 and met Viktor Horsting during admission to the school. Their education and graduation work were individually credited; after relocating to Paris, both are reported to have trained or assisted at Maison Martin Margiela, though the surviving evidence does not settle their exact employment titles.
Snoeren and Horsting established their joint public identity through the 1993 Hyères collection, whose reconstructed and distressed garments won the Grand Prix, Press Award and Women’s Award. Under the Viktor&Rolf name they moved from art-world installations and museum patronage into couture, ready-to-wear, menswear, beauty licensing and bridalwear, while maintaining a parallel body of performance, costume and exhibition work.
Snoeren remains co-creative director of Viktor&Rolf following OTB’s full acquisition in June 2026. No substantial independent fashion career after 1993 has been documented, and the house has not published a stable split of responsibilities between the two founders. His career record therefore preserves his individual formation while assigning the brand’s later design output jointly.
Design ethos
Snoeren works through the joint authorship established with Horsting, using discussion, repetition and a controlled public symmetry to suppress the usual hierarchy between two named designers. Matching dress and mirrored gestures operate as an image system, but the more important consequence is practical: the collections are credited to the pair without speculative separation into individual specialisms.
The shared design language begins with rigorous garment construction and then subjects it to physical change. Layers accumulate until a body becomes a pedestal; tailored forms are inflated, sliced or turned sideways; bows, ruffles and couture embroidery expand into structural devices. Reconstructed clothing, vintage dresses and leftover textiles appear in specific projects alongside latex, crystal, brass, synthetic tulle and engineered supports.
Snoeren’s practice extends from garment to encounter. The founders use the runway as theatre, galleries as fashion venues and museums as active custodians, while collaborators in music, dance, photography and spatial design alter the conditions in which the clothes are seen. Commercial lines distil parts of this vocabulary without claiming the same material or performative intensity as couture.

Viktor&Rolf announced Mariage with Justin Alexander in July 2016 and presented the first full line during New York Bridal Week that October. Creative direction remained with the founders while production and distribution were handled by the bridal specialist.
2015
Viktor&Rolf and OTB announced on 3 February 2015 that the seasonal womenswear and menswear ready-to-wear lines would end after Autumn/Winter 2015. The closure removed the old apparel system and concentrated the house on couture, fragrance and later licensed bridalwear.
2014
Viktor&Rolf designed costumes and contributed to the set for Jorma Elo’s Shape with Dutch National Ballet. Square, eroded white tutus converted classical ballet dress into moving sculptural forms.
2013
Viktor&Rolf returned to the Paris haute couture schedule on 3 July 2013 after a thirteen-year absence from the format. The renewed couture line established the slower, atelier-led practice that would remain after ready-to-wear closed in 2015.
2011
Viktor&Rolf created costumes for Robert Wilson’s Grace for Grace gala production in Monte Carlo, with music by Rufus Wainwright. The work completes the three-project Wilson sequence documented by the surviving institutional record.
2009
For Robert Wilson’s Der Freischütz at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Viktor&Rolf designed neoprene-inflected Germanic dress, flower forms, black bows and crystal surfaces shaped for stage lighting. It was the duo’s second documented Wilson costume commission.
2008
By 2008 Viktor&Rolf had formalised its Dolls project, commissioning porcelain figures dressed in exact scaled replicas of selected runway looks. The continuing series turned miniature garment-making into a portable house archive; its precise start remains contested between 2006 and 2008.
2008
The House of Viktor & Rolf opened at the Barbican Art Gallery on 18 June 2008 as the first British retrospective devoted to the designers. A six-metre dolls’ house designed by Siebe Tettero organised miniature replicas of the runway archive into a single spatial work.
2006
The Viktor&Rolf for H&M capsule launched globally on 9 November 2006. H&M manufactured and distributed the women’s and men’s pieces, bringing the house’s tuxedos, cocktail dressing and love motifs into mass retail for one season.
2005
Flowerbomb reached the commercial market in 2005 after its concept unveiling in October 2004. Its faceted grenade bottle and floral composition established the central product of the long-running L’Oréal licence.
2004
Viktor&Rolf designed restrictive architectural costumes for Robert Wilson’s 2Lips and Dancers and Space, premiered by NDT III in Luxembourg. The commission began a recurring stage relationship and required choreography to respond to the clothing’s physical limits.
2004
Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren guest-curated Fashion in Colors with the Kyoto Costume Institute, selecting dress from the seventeenth century to contemporary fashion by colour. The exhibition opened at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, before travelling to the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo through 5 December 2004.
2003
Viktor & Rolf par Viktor & Rolf, première décennie opened at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile on 8 October 2003. The Paris retrospective formalised the first ten years of work across fashion, installation and image-making.
2003
Viktor&Rolf introduced the Vision eyewear line in 2003 through specialist licensing. The category extended the house into repeatable accessories, although the full sequence of historic and current producers remains unresolved.
2003
The founders introduced Viktor & Rolf Monsieur at Pitti Uomo in Florence in January 2003. Menswear became a continuing division alongside womenswear and remained active through the Autumn/Winter 2015 season.
2002
Viktor&Rolf signed a global beauty and fragrance licence with L’Oréal in April 2002. L’Oréal developed, manufactured and distributed the products while the fashion house retained its separate identity and creative authorship.
2001
Viktor&Rolf left the couture schedule after its July 2000 presentation as ready-to-wear became the principal seasonal apparel system. Couture remained absent for thirteen years, ending with the house’s return on 3 July 2013.
2000
The Groninger Museum staged a dedicated exhibition of Viktor&Rolf in its DeLucchi Pavilion in December 2000. The display gave public form to the museum’s early collecting relationship and placed couture objects inside a contemporary-art institution while the house’s ready-to-wear system was being established.
2000
Viktor&Rolf opened a distributed womenswear ready-to-wear line in 2000 with industrial support from Gibò. The move introduced scalable apparel alongside couture and created the house’s first sustained wholesale structure.
1999
Viktor&Rolf was inscribed on the official Paris couture calendar in July 1999, after two separate couture-format presentations in 1998. The recognition moved the house from off-calendar experiments into an institutional seasonal framework.
1998
The Groninger Museum began a systematic collecting relationship with Viktor&Rolf in 1998 and acquired work from the house’s early couture sequence. Institutional purchases supplied material support and established a permanent museum record before the ready-to-wear business was fully formed.
1998
Viktor&Rolf began its first couture-format sequence in January 1998, moving garments from static gallery display onto bodies in a scheduled presentation. The change opened a distinct line of practice before the house received official Paris couture-calendar recognition in 1999.
1997
Le Regard Noir ran at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam from 5 April to 18 May 1997. Produced with photographers Anouschka Blommers and Niels Schumm, it strengthened the image-led and institutional side of the practice before couture entry.
1996
The Launch installation at Torch Gallery used miniatures and a sealed, unusable fragrance edition to parody the machinery of fashion-house expansion. Le Parfum was a conceptual object, not the beginning of the later L’Oréal fragrance business.
1996
Viktor&Rolf replaced a conventional seasonal output with On Strike fly-posters across Paris. The intervention made refusal of the fashion calendar itself the public work and produced no apparel collection.
1995
At Galerie Patricia Dorfmann, five suspended gold outfits appeared above black silk-organza shadows while an audio track recited supermodel names. The hybrid installation exposed the period’s unstable boundary between Viktor&Rolf’s clothing and art practice.
1994
ANDAM awarded Viktor&Rolf a fellowship in 1994. The support helped sustain the joint practice during a period shaped by grants, museum purchases and gallery venues instead of ordinary retail distribution.
1994
Viktor&Rolf participated in Le Cri Néerlandais, a peer collective of Arnhem graduates that presented at the Institut Néerlandais in Paris. The collective shared visibility and resources but remained separate from the Viktor&Rolf brand structure.
1994
Viktor&Rolf contributed to L’Hiver de l’Amour at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris from 10 February to 13 March 1994. Its group-exhibition context places the work within contemporary art rather than the seasonal runway record.
1993
The joint practice won the Grand Prix, Press Award and Women’s Award at the Salon Européen des Jeunes Stylistes in Hyères. The awards supplied early capital and international visibility at the point when a conventional wholesale structure did not exist.
1993
Rolf Snoeren assumed continuing joint creative direction of the house he co-founded with Viktor Horsting. The role forms one half of an undivided creative partnership rather than a separately defined house function.
