Shinsaku Maehama

Shinsaku Maehama is a Japanese fashion designer born in Okinawa Prefecture in 1977. He studied in the Apparel Design Department at Bunka Fashion College and received a Special Selection award at the 2001 Kobe Fashion Contest for 「風化—劣化した服—」, translated as “Weathering — Deteriorated Clothes”. After graduating in March 2002, he moved to Paris and studied at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

In 2004 Maehama worked under Kenzo Takada on an Olympic uniform project and founded golem in Paris. The label developed menswear and womenswear through antique and second-hand textiles, draped construction and limited production, appearing in Paris showroom contexts and a small network of Japanese retailers. Its seasonal chronology is verified through the Spring/Summer 2018 CABANE order cycle, although no formal closure or definitive final collection has been located.

Maehama’s later practice includes emeth, a separate bespoke bridal and formalwear label, and VVR, a graphic T-shirt collaboration associated with Ko Oda. Current sources identify him as the representative of a Maehama-linked NOAM company, the designer and couturier of emeth, and a part-time instructor in fashion and apparel weaving at Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. These activities show an active wider career while golem remains dormant as a seasonal label.

Maehama’s work begins with the idea that clothing is not complete when it leaves the atelier. The weathering explored in his 2001 student collection became the central logic of golem: fading, abrasion, scratches and frayed edges were allowed to accumulate as records of the wearer’s life. The label’s name reinforced this position through the image of an unfinished vessel brought into being by another body.

His technical method joined French couture draping with irregular historic material. Antique linen, distressed wool, silk and limited vintage lengths were shaped through moulage, with the fabric’s weight and previous life influencing the pattern. Reports from different periods document handmade lines, French production, selected Japanese manufacture, hand-brushed pigment, raw-cut finishes and numbered one-offs, while leaving the full studio and subcontractor network unresolved.

Maehama separated different forms of practice rather than forcing them into one brand architecture. golem handled seasonal menswear and womenswear built around incompletion and wear; emeth developed bespoke bridal and formal garments from antique lace and silk; VVR used graphic T-shirts and collage. Across these projects, the consistent element is a close relation between material memory, hand construction and the individual client or wearer.
