Introduction
Steven Raj Bhaskaran is a Canadian artist and designer, and the co-founder of the radical creative duo Fecal Matter (Matières Fécales). Born in Montreal and educated at LaSalle College, Bhaskaran collaborates with Hannah Rose Dalton to produce a range of multidisciplinary works spanning fashion, music, and film. He is a prominent voice in the global conversation regarding the future of identity and the human form in the digital age.
His work is characterized by its confrontational nature and its commitment to absolute self-expression. Through Fecal Matter, he has built a significant following for an aesthetic that is both disturbing and beautiful, pushing the boundaries of what is socially acceptable in terms of personal appearance and sartorial choice.
Design ethos
The creative philosophy is rooted in the provocation of social norms and the exploration of 'censorship' regarding the human body. This approach employs theatricality and body-horror elements as primary forms of self-expression, resulting in a gender-neutral and trans-humanist aesthetic. There is a consistent focus on visceral textures and hand-crafted construction, where the process of making is often as provocative as the final output.
Material innovation involves the use of silicone and unconventional fabrics to create garments that mimic biological forms or appear as extensions of the skin. The work prioritises the 'uncanny' and the grotesque, using these signals to question the limitations placed on individual identity by the mainstream fashion industry. By merging high-concept art with a DIY punk sensibility, the ethos celebrates a radical autonomy that rejects any form of aesthetic compromise.
