Introduction
Steven Robinson was a British fashion studio director and one of John Galliano’s central collaborators. Contemporary accounts placed Robinson, Bill Gaytten and Galliano at the core of the research and fitting process through which collection themes became internal working books, silhouettes and finished runway systems.
At Christian Dior, the house described Robinson as head of the Christian Dior and Galliano studios. Colleagues and later reporting characterised him as Galliano’s alter ego and a principal organiser who connected ideas, studio teams and production. Robinson died in April 2007, removing a key part of the internal structure behind both Dior and the John Galliano label.
Design ethos
Robinson’s authorship was organisational and interpretive. He helped turn broad historical and visual research into a coherent collection framework, mediating between the designer’s narrative concepts and the practical demands of studios, fittings and seasonal production.
The work demonstrates why Galliano-era spectacle cannot be attributed to one person alone. Robinson’s contribution lay in continuity, editing and realisation: the less visible processes that allowed cutting, styling, sets and accessories to arrive as one public image.
