Introduction
Wilbert Das is a Dutch fashion designer best known for directing Diesel through its international expansion. After graduating from Arnhem in 1988, he joined the company as an assistant designer, initially associated with menswear, and was formally named Creative Director in 1993.
His remit grew beyond seasonal clothing to encompass image, communications, shows, stores, accessories and partner-led lifestyle categories. During this period Diesel launched 55DSL, StyleLab, Diesel Black Gold and its early homeware system while the mainline became a global denim and casualwear business.
Das’s departure was reported in November 2009. A possible seasonal tail through Autumn/Winter 2010–11 remains unresolved, so his employment boundary and final designed collection are kept separate.
Design ethos
Das worked across a system in which product, campaign and environment were designed together. Denim treatment and casualwear supplied the material base, while advertising, retail interiors and runway presentation established a wider narrative around the clothing.
His leadership was collaborative rather than solitary. Category managers, internal studios, advertising director Maurizio Marchiori, agencies, photographers and industrial partners contributed distinct forms of authorship under his broader creative remit.
The sub-labels created during his tenure show a repeated method: separate a new audience or degree of experimentation into its own structure, then give it dedicated product, image and distribution while retaining a relationship to Diesel.
