Yoshihiko Ishibashi

Yoshihiko Ishibashi is a Japanese leather designer and product-development specialist whose career is closely associated with Obelisk’s Tokyo atelier. He was already entering the Japan Leather Award under Yūgen Kaisha Obelisk affiliation in 2016, when he received the Fashion Accessories category award. By 2024 the award organisation identified him explicitly as Obelisk’s product manager.

Ishibashi returned to the Japan Leather Award with an increasingly elaborate personal series built around punched leather and sashiko. Punching Leather Sashiko Riders won the 2023 Grand Prix and Best Product Award, and the 2024 development, Punching Leather Sashiko Riders ver.3 type.Bandana, won another Grand Prix as well as the Wear & Goods Future Design Award. His 2025 entries continued under Obelisk company affiliation, including two works selected for the award programme’s exhibition cycle.

Ishibashi has described those competition pieces as a private creative practice pursued outside his customer-facing job, giving him room to test labour-intensive ideas without normal production constraints. The distinction between professional product work and independent experimentation is central to his practice: one demands repeatable use and delivery, while the other allows techniques to be pushed far beyond ordinary commercial limits.

Ishibashi’s independent leather work is driven by function first and then expanded through extreme hand labour. The sashiko rider series began from an interest in repair: punched leather creates a regular field through which thread can be worked repeatedly, turning a mending technique associated with cloth into both reinforcement and graphic surface on a motorcycle jacket.

Utility continues inside the more theatrical pieces. The 2024 jacket incorporated a detachable neck warmer that could be fixed to the hem and used as storage for gloves, while repair access was built into the lining and fastening system so damaged sashiko could be reached later. These choices treat transformation and maintainability as part of the garment architecture rather than as visual tricks added after construction.

The scale of the handwork deliberately exceeds normal commercial efficiency: the 2024 jacket required around 150 hours of sashiko. Ishibashi keeps that experimental intensity separate from his Obelisk product-management role, where customer use, delivery and repeatable product logic impose different constraints. Across both contexts, his work centres on leather as a material that can be repaired, reconfigured and made to carry evidence of use.
