Yvan Mispelaere

Yvan Mispelaere is a French fashion designer whose career developed across major Parisian and Italian houses before his period as creative director of Diane von Furstenberg. He began training with Claude Montana at Lanvin in 1989 and spent five years as Montana’s assistant. In 1994 he moved to Rome to work with Valentino, followed by Prada in Milan from 1998. He returned to Paris as artistic director of Louis Féraud from 2000 to 2002.

Mispelaere subsequently worked at Chloé under Phoebe Philo and became design director at Gucci under Frida Giannini. Alongside those house roles, he introduced his own clothing line with a Paris Fashion Week show in March 2003. The sequence gave him experience across couture-inflected glamour, luxury ready-to-wear, accessories-driven houses and an independent label before he moved to New York for DVF.

He became DVF creative director in April 2010 and worked in recurring co-authorship with Diane von Furstenberg. Spring 2011 was the first securely credited collection of the partnership, and Spring 2013, presented on 8 September 2012, was the last. Mispelaere stepped down on 12 September 2012, after which von Furstenberg took direct leadership of the design team. His DVF tenure remains one of the clearest collaborative founder-and-director periods in the house’s modern history.

Mispelaere’s career shows a sustained interest in femininity shaped through line, surface and controlled glamour. Experience with Montana, Valentino, Prada and Féraud exposed him to very different vocabularies, from emphatic structure to polished luxury, and his work repeatedly translates those lessons into clothes with a clear silhouette and a refined finish.

At DVF, colour, print and drape became the principal materials of that sensibility. The collections developed the founder’s established dress language through layered prints, fluid trousers, elongated dresses and increasingly broad wardrobe categories. Co-authorship with von Furstenberg remained visible in the runway credits, allowing the house codes to stay present as Mispelaere altered proportion and styling.

His work is especially attentive to the identity of the house around him. Brand archives, established feminine codes and the existing customer provide a framework that can be edited through fabric, cut and styling. Across his appointments, this produces clothes that feel specific to their setting while retaining his preference for polish, sensual movement and decorative control.
