Overview
Missoni was born out of the partnership between Ottavio ‘Tai’ Missoni and Rosita Jelmini, who opened a knitwear workshop in Gallarate in 1953 after meeting at the London Olympics. They debuted their first collection at the Milan boutique Biki in 1958, but it was the late 1960s and 1970s that saw Missoni become an international sensation. The label’s hallmark is its kaleidoscopic knitwear featuring zigzags, stripes, waves and abstract florals in hundreds of colours.
Missoni’s innovative use of space‑dyed yarns and knitting machines allowed it to blend different hues seamlessly. The brand expanded into homeware, fragrance and accessories, and family members Luca, Angela and Vittorio Missoni joined the business to continue its legacy.
Over the decades Missoni collaborated with artists and photographers, staged groundbreaking runway shows and embraced technological advances while maintaining its artisanal roots. Despite tragedies such as the disappearance of CEO Vittorio Missoni in 2013, the company has remained family‑run, with Angela Missoni serving as creative director until 2021. Missoni’s enduring appeal lies in its celebration of colour, craftsmanship and the idea that clothing can be a work of art.
Philosophy
Missoni’s philosophy is encapsulated by Rosita Missoni’s belief that garments should be timeless pieces purchased because they speak to the heart, not because they are trendy. The brand embraces an artistic approach to design, treating knitwear as a medium for experimentation. Each piece is conceived as a painting in motion, with colours blending like brushstrokes. This ethos encourages customers to express themselves through pattern and texture rather than conforming to seasonal looks.
At the same time, Missoni is committed to family values and craftsmanship. Production remains largely in Italy, where skilled artisans oversee complex knitting techniques. The company invests in sustainability by using natural fibres and reducing waste through thoughtful pattern placement.
Missoni’s collaborations with artists and musicians further blur the lines between fashion and art, reinforcing its identity as a cultural brand. Ultimately, Missoni invites wearers to embrace joy, individuality and tradition through the medium of knitwear.
