Introduction
Alberto Caliri is an Italian fashion designer and the creative director of Missoni. Born in Sorrento, he moved to Milan at 18 to study at the Istituto Europeo di Design, then worked at Jil Sander, Ballantyne Cashmere and Prada before joining Missoni in 1998. He became a close collaborator of Angela Missoni and worked across pre-collections, menswear and womenswear.
After Angela Missoni stepped down from creative direction in 2021, Caliri oversaw the collections on an interim basis. He subsequently led Missoni Home and Missoni Sport before being appointed creative director of the house in October 2024, succeeding Filippo Grazioli. His first collection in that appointment was shown for Autumn/Winter 2025. He continued in the role through Missoni’s Autumn/Winter 2026 collection, overseeing a house-wide approach that links fashion and interiors through Missoni’s knitwear, colour and textile development.
Design ethos
Caliri treats the textile as the starting point rather than a surface applied after a garment has been designed. At Missoni, he develops yarn, colour and silhouette in parallel, allowing loom processes, irregularities and unexpected combinations to redirect the work. He has described error, surprise and accident as useful parts of the process, while insisting that the house’s identity is strong enough to remain flexible.
His collections favour evolution over abrupt resets. Established shapes are carried forward, adjusted through new materials, scale and layering, and mixed with pieces that suggest clothing accumulated across generations. Caliri studies the archive for its experimental attitude rather than reproducing a fixed catalogue of zigzags and stripes. He also describes the studio as a collaborative, almost choral environment shaped by conversations and impressions. The approach preserves recognisable Missoni techniques while testing how knitwear, tailoring and domestic textiles can support new combinations.
