Introduction
Alistair Blair was appointed Balmain ready-to-wear designer in March 1990, replacing Erik Mortensen in that category while Mortensen continued haute couture. His first Balmain collection was presented on 22 October 1990.
Design ethos
Blair’s appointment records a clear category split during Balmain’s post-founder transition. It does not establish couture authority or a house-wide creative-director role.
