Introduction
Andreas Melbostad is a Norwegian fashion designer whose career includes work in Paris, New York and Milan across womenswear, menswear and accessories. Before Diesel Black Gold he held design roles at several international houses and developed a practice centred on precise outerwear, tailoring and an American-inflected utility wardrobe.
Diesel recruited Melbostad for Diesel Black Gold womenswear in October 2012. Pre-Fall 2013 was his first collection and Fall/Winter 2013 his first runway season; on 6 September 2013 he became line-wide Creative Director, adding menswear and global image to his remit.
His first menswear collection followed for Fall/Winter 2014. Melbostad continued through combined runway presentations and the last recovered Black Gold runway in January 2018, with credited lookbook evidence into March 2019; his exact employment end remains unresolved.
Design ethos
Melbostad works through tension between fitted structure and hard utility. Biker jackets, military outerwear, narrow tailoring and hardware are refined through exact cutting, controlled layering and a restrained surface palette.
At Diesel Black Gold, denim and leather were treated as components of a directional wardrobe rather than casualwear defaults. His staged expansion from womenswear to the whole line produced a coherent image while keeping the industrial codes of the Diesel parent visible.
