Introduction
Christopher Kane is a Scottish fashion designer who graduated from Central Saint Martins and established his London label with his sister Tammy Kane in 2006. His early neon stretch lace, body-conscious construction and unexpected material references placed the company at the centre of a renewed London womenswear scene.
Kane also worked with Donatella Versace on the staged revival of Versus, beginning with an Autumn/Winter 2009–10 accessories capsule and developing into full collections before the partnership ended in 2012. Kering acquired a majority stake in his namesake company in 2013 and divested it in 2018; the independent label later closed in 2023. A 2024 guest residency with Self-Portrait returned several of his recognisable ideas to production.
Mulberry appointed Kane Creative Director of Women’s Ready-to-Wear on 26 March 2026. The title is deliberately limited: he is responsible for restoring seasonal womenswear and runway presentation, while the internal Creative Studio retains leather goods and the wider product system. His first collection had not yet been shown at the research cutoff.
Design ethos
Kane builds collections through friction between attraction and discomfort. Stretch lace, neon colour, transparent materials, crystal mesh, plastic, anatomical imagery and industrial fastenings have allowed him to test how femininity is coded through surface, exposure and control.
His references range from school uniforms and domestic objects to science, fetish, digital image and popular cinema. The source is rarely reproduced literally; it becomes a cutout, print, fastening, proportion or material treatment that can operate on the body with immediate visual force.
Across his own label, Versus and guest work, precise dress construction keeps those references from becoming novelty. The Mulberry appointment introduces that method into a heritage house with a separate leather-goods studio, so the eventual relationship between clothing, bags and runway image should be read from completed work rather than assumed in advance.
