Introduction
Daisuke Obana is a Japanese designer born on 28 January 1974 in Kanagawa Prefecture. His fashion education developed through vintage retail and fieldwork: after leaving a tailoring-oriented vocational school without graduating, he worked in vintage shops, began travelling to the United States for buying at eighteen and became involved in the launch of go-getter in the mid-1990s. By 1999 he was selling remade vintage and original products inside the shop, and on 1 December 2000 he opened Mister hollywood in Harajuku. N.HOOLYWOOD was established the following year, with its first collection presented for Spring/Summer 2002.
Obana has remained the defining designer and creative director of N.HOOLYWOOD while steadily expanding its internal structure. He launched COMPILE in 2004, UNDER SUMMIT WEAR in 2007 and TEST PRODUCT EXCHANGE SERVICE in Spring/Summer 2009, then moved the main collection’s presentation stage from Tokyo to New York in 2010. His New York years ranged from historically researched narrative collections to increasingly technical and abstract studies of uniforms, climate, typography, workwear and protective clothing. In the 2020s, COMPILE and TPES became the most visible seasonal presentation vehicles as the travel-dependent theme-led main collection entered suspension.
His career also includes design work beyond N.HOOLYWOOD. Ryohin Keikaku appointed him menswear design director of the renewed MUJI Labo for Spring/Summer 2017; he continued with the line through Spring/Summer 2024, when MUJI Labo moved to an in-house design structure. In 2019 he designed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay uniform and served as uniform design director for the Paralympic Torch Relay. He remains Designer / Creative Director of N.HOOLYWOOD and representative director of MISTER HOLLYWOOD CO., LTD., with the 2024 exhibition Record of Distress making his early American vintage-sourcing archive public through thousands of photographs and annotated maps.
Design ethos
Obana’s method begins with the object itself. Years spent buying vintage clothing taught him to inspect labels, linings, seams, construction, wear and fabric behaviour before deciding what a garment means culturally. His earliest N.HOOLYWOOD work grew directly from remaking used clothes, and the practice developed into a more systematic form of analysis: taking familiar clothing apart conceptually and physically, identifying the mechanism that gives it character, then rebuilding that mechanism for a different body, material or use.
His collections often start from travel, archives and specific historical systems, but the final clothing is shaped by selection and editing. A skyscraper can become geometry in a coat; military sandbags can inform construction and installation; aviation, mountain equipment or diving gear can become pocket systems, layering or technical fabric choices. This process explains why N.HOOLYWOOD can move between Americana, tailoring, uniforms and abstract technical clothing without depending on a single visual signature. Proportion, function and the logic of the original object provide the continuity.
The internal lines sharpen different parts of that approach. COMPILE reduces the narrative layer and concentrates on tailoring, material and comfort; TPES turns military research into everyday clothing; UNDER WEAR and UNDER SUMMIT WEAR treat basics as a problem of fabric, sizing and standardisation; FR brings industrial protection requirements into the same design language. Obana’s MUJI Labo and torch-relay uniform work show the method at its most disciplined, where visual authorship is carried by proportion, construction and use, with overt branding kept secondary.

Career history
2024
N.HOOLYWOOD FR launched commercially on 2 November 2024 as a new workwear line informed by Fire Resistant and Flame Resistant specifications. The line extends Obana’s functional research into hard-use garments built around an original flame-resistant material.
2024
Daisuke Obana’s Record of Distress exhibition opened at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO on 19 October 2024, presenting roughly 3,000 instant photographs and annotated maps from his American vintage-buying years. The exhibition exposed the field archive that predates N.HOOLYWOOD and underpins its long-running method of garment research.
2022
N.HOOLYWOOD entered a recurring three-way footwear series with INVINCIBLE and New Balance in the 2020s, with documented 2002R and 1906 projects from 2022 onward. Recent iterations are explicitly led by TPES and apply its military-derived materials and restrained colour systems to performance footwear.
2021
N.HOOLYWOOD and Champion began NEW WEAVE in 2021 as an experimental recurring project built around Champion classics and Reverse Weave construction. Repeated editions use N.HOOLYWOOD pattern cutting and proportion to rework familiar sportswear; Spring/Summer 2026 was the ninth collaboration.
2021
The travel- and theme-led N.HOOLYWOOD main collection entered suspension from Spring/Summer 2021 after the pandemic interrupted the field-research process on which it depended. The master brand remained active while COMPILE, TPES and other internal lines continued to carry seasonal product and presentation.
2020
After COMPILE received its first show-format presentation in February 2020, N.HOOLYWOOD released separate COMPILE and TPES collections through CFDA RUNWAY360 in September. The change established a line-led public seasonal system that became increasingly important as the pandemic interrupted the travel-dependent main collection.
2019
N.HOOLYWOOD began using archival fabric from Jun Takahashi’s UNDERCOVER in the Spring/Summer 2020 period, developing the material into the REBEL FABRIC BY UNDERCOVER project. Later iterations extended the archive reconstruction into collaborative footwear and product through 2021.
2018
On 16 October 2018 N.HOOLYWOOD returned to the official Tokyo runway calendar with an additional presentation of its Spring/Summer 2019 collection, its first Tokyo show in roughly eight and a half years. The event added Tokyo back into a presentation practice that otherwise remained New York-facing.
2012
N.HOOLYWOOD began a recurring relationship with Converse Addict around Autumn/Winter 2012. The partnership has returned across master-brand, COMPILE and special-project releases, repeatedly using archival footwear shapes as a base for material and construction changes.
2011
N.HOOLYWOOD introduced BARRACKS KIT in 2011 as an underwear extension within TEST PRODUCT EXCHANGE SERVICE. The sub-line brought the TPES military framework into base layers and barracks-associated essentials.
2010
On 10 September 2010 N.HOOLYWOOD presented Spring/Summer 2011 in New York, beginning a durable shift of the main collection’s presentation stage away from Tokyo. The company and retail base remained in Japan while New York became the principal fashion-week context for the following decade.
2009
N.HOOLYWOOD TEST PRODUCT EXCHANGE SERVICE began in Spring/Summer 2009 as a durable military-to-civilian line. TPES studies military garments, equipment and specifications, then adapts their functions for contemporary everyday use.
2007
UNDER SUMMIT WEAR debuted in 2007 as the higher-end line within N.HOOLYWOOD’s underwear system. It extended the brand’s attention to basics through refined materials, a broad size structure and elevated base-layer construction.
2004
N.HOOLYWOOD introduced COMPILE in 2004 as a dress and formal line with an operating logic distinct from the main collection’s seasonal narratives. Its focus on tailoring, material, detail and comfort later made it one of the label’s principal seasonal presentation vehicles.
2001
N.HOOLYWOOD developed UNDER WEAR from the brand’s early period as a permanent system of underwear and minimum everyday garments. The line established basics, fabric choice and a broad sizing structure as continuing design subjects alongside the seasonal main collection.
2001
Obana has led N.HOOLYWOOD’s design since the brand was established and is currently identified by the house as Designer / Creative Director. His tenure spans the Tokyo collection years, the New York presentation period and the later line-led system centred on COMPILE and TPES.
2001
Daisuke Obana established N.HOOLYWOOD in Tokyo in 2001 after developing remade clothing through vintage retail and opening Mister hollywood. The label carried his archive-led garment analysis into an independent fashion practice.
2000
Daisuke Obana opened Mister hollywood in Harajuku on 1 December 2000 as an independent retail and creative base. The shop preceded the N.HOOLYWOOD brand and provided the immediate setting for its formation.
1999
While working in the go-getter vintage-retail environment, Daisuke Obana began selling remade vintage and original products in a dedicated shop corner in 1999. The work established the remake and garment-analysis practice that preceded N.HOOLYWOOD.
