Overview
N.HOOLYWOOD is a Tokyo fashion label founded in 2001 by Daisuke Obana, whose route into design began in vintage retail, American buying trips and the physical study of used clothing. Before the label appeared, Obana had worked as a buyer and shop manager, developed remade and original pieces inside go-getter, and opened the Mister hollywood shop in Harajuku in December 2000. N.HOOLYWOOD followed the next year, with its first Spring/Summer 2002 collection carrying the remake logic of that earlier practice into a formal clothing proposition.
During the 2000s the label built a theme-led main collection around field research, garment archetypes and cultural history while developing a parallel line system. UNDER WEAR established a permanent base of underwear and essentials; COMPILE began in 2004 as a dress-focused line; UNDER SUMMIT WEAR followed in 2007 as a higher-end extension of the underwear system; and TEST PRODUCT EXCHANGE SERVICE, or TPES, began in Spring/Summer 2009 with a military-to-civilian remit. The main collection shifted its presentation stage from Tokyo to New York in 2010, and Obana used the following decade to move between historical American subjects, technical clothing, architecture, typography, workwear and more abstract functional research.
The 2020s reorganised N.HOOLYWOOD around its internal lines. COMPILE staged its first show-format presentation in New York in February 2020, and separate COMPILE and TPES releases became central to the public seasonal rhythm during the pandemic. The travel-dependent theme-led main collection has been suspended since Spring/Summer 2021, while the master N.HOOLYWOOD identity remains active alongside COMPILE, TPES, UNDER WEAR, UNDER SUMMIT WEAR and the FR workwear line introduced in 2024. Recurring projects with Champion, Converse Addict, New Balance and INVINCIBLE, G-SHOCK, LOOPWHEELER and long-standing American workwear makers extend the same research practice into collaborative product.
Philosophy
N.HOOLYWOOD is built on close observation of existing clothes. Obana's vintage-buying years trained him to read garments through linings, labels, seams, fabric behaviour and construction details, and his early remake practice treated used clothing as material that could be cut, shifted and rebuilt. That method remains central to the label: familiar military garments, tailoring, workwear, underwear, sportswear and mass-produced basics are examined for the systems that make them function, then edited into new proportions and uses.
The main collection historically gave that process a narrative frame. Travel and field research supplied subjects as varied as American skyscrapers, the space race, Hemingway, aviation, Prohibition, deep-sea equipment and subcultural dress, but the results were rarely simple replicas. Architectural geometry could become pattern cutting; military field equipment could become fabric or pocket logic; a historical uniform could be reduced to its practical mechanism and rebuilt for contemporary movement. The clothes often look restrained at first glance, with the more specific argument carried by construction, fabrication, proportion and the friction between archive detail and current utility.
The internal lines isolate different questions inside the same practice. COMPILE concentrates on formal and dress codes without a season-by-season narrative theme; TPES converts military research into civilian clothing; UNDER WEAR and UNDER SUMMIT WEAR treat underwear and basics as a study in fit, material and standardisation; FR applies the same analytical discipline to flame-resistant workwear. Obana's external work for MUJI Labo and institutional uniforms follows a related economy of means, showing how his design language can move from concept-heavy fashion to highly regulated everyday clothing without losing its attention to function and construction.

Button TextDaisuke Obana’s Record of Distress exhibition opened at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO on 19 October 2024, presenting roughly 3,000 instant photographs and annotated maps from his American vintage-buying years. The exhibition exposed the field archive that predates N.HOOLYWOOD and underpins its long-running method of garment research.
N.HOOLYWOOD entered a recurring three-way footwear series with INVINCIBLE and New Balance in the 2020s, with documented 2002R and 1906 projects from 2022 onward. Recent iterations are explicitly led by TPES and apply its military-derived materials and restrained colour systems to performance footwear.
The travel- and theme-led N.HOOLYWOOD main collection entered suspension from Spring/Summer 2021 after the pandemic interrupted the field-research process on which it depended. The master brand remained active while COMPILE, TPES and other internal lines continued to carry seasonal product and presentation.
After COMPILE received its first show-format presentation in February 2020, N.HOOLYWOOD released separate COMPILE and TPES collections through CFDA RUNWAY360 in September. The change established a line-led public seasonal system that became increasingly important as the pandemic interrupted the travel-dependent main collection.
On 16 October 2018 N.HOOLYWOOD returned to the official Tokyo runway calendar with an additional presentation of its Spring/Summer 2019 collection, its first Tokyo show in roughly eight and a half years. The event added Tokyo back into a presentation practice that otherwise remained New York-facing.
