Introduction
Daniel Roseberry is an American designer and the Creative Director of Schiaparelli, appointed in 2019. Raised in Texas and having spent over a decade as Head of Design at Thom Browne, he became the first American to lead a French haute couture house. Under his creative leadership, Schiaparelli has undergone a dramatic revitalisation, reclaiming its position as a dominant force in high fashion and on the global red carpet.
Roseberry has successfully re-engaged the house with its avant-garde roots, creating garments that are as much works of art as they are fashion. His ability to combine high-concept surrealism with masterful couture techniques has earned him widespread acclaim and the patronage of the world’s most influential cultural icons.
Design ethos
The design process is driven by a concept of ‘modern surrealism’, where the phantasmagoric heritage of Elsa Schiaparelli is reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. This involves the extensive use of anatomical jewellery—or ‘bijoux-vêtements’—and voluminous, technically complex silhouettes that challenge conventional proportions. Every piece is intended to carry profound ‘meaning’, moving beyond simple fabrication to create a narrative-driven form of wearable art.
Gold, crystals, and innovative materials such as moulded leather are utilised to evoke a sense of theatrical opulence and irreverence. The silhouette is frequently exaggerated and sculptural, focusing on the interplay between the human form and the fantastical elements that adorn it. By layering traditional couture techniques with a fresh, sometimes provocative perspective, the work seeks to reclaim the sense of wonder and intellectual provocation that defined the house’s origins.
