Edward Buchanan

Edward Buchanan is an American fashion designer born in Cleveland in 1970. He studied at Columbus College of Art & Design and Parsons, worked in display and visual merchandising for Benetton, Gap and Armani, and undertook fashion-illustration work before moving into design. His early career joined retail presentation to garment development, a combination that became central to his work in Italy.

Buchanan joined Bottega Veneta in 1995 or 1996 as Design Director and the first dedicated ready-to-wear designer. He established the Milan apparel office, developed factory relationships, hired assistants and moved clothing from a store capsule into wholesale and public presentations. His authority remained category-specific under owner and Creative Director Laura Moltedo, with separate designers responsible for footwear, bags and accessories.

After Bottega Veneta, Buchanan co-founded Le Flesh with Manuela Morin, worked in consultancy across Italian companies and founded the knitwear label Sansovino 6 in 2009. His wider practice has continued through independent design and teaching, preserving a career in which product, manufacturing and the organisation of a studio matter as much as runway image.

Buchanan builds clothing through the practical systems that make a collection possible. At Bottega Veneta he treated the Milan office, knitwear development, external factories and a small design team as part of the design process, translating a leather-goods house into an apparel proposition without claiming authority over every category.

His work favours tactile knitwear, direct colour and garments that gain character through fit and movement. The early all-white Bottega presentation and later public seasons used material clarity to make the clothing legible, while collaboration with technical makers kept the work tied to production rather than image alone.

Sansovino 6 extended this approach through knitwear treated as a complete wardrobe system. Across house employment and independent practice, Buchanan’s method remains attentive to factory knowledge, collective studio labour and the cultural life of clothes after they leave the runway.
