Introduction
Gaetano Savini was an influential Italian entrepreneur and the visionary co-founder of the luxury menswear house Brioni. Established in 1945 in partnership with tailor Nazareno Fonticoli, the brand played a pivotal role in revitalising European fashion following the Second World War. Savini is widely credited with staging the first-ever men's fashion runway show at Florence's Palazzo Pitti in 1952, a landmark event that shifted the global focus of masculine elegance toward Italy.
As the primary commercial and creative strategist for Brioni, Savini was instrumental in defining the 'Roman Style', which offered a sophisticated alternative to traditional British tailoring. Often referred to as the 'Dior of menswear', his leadership helped transform the house into an international benchmark for luxury. His legacy remains central to the narrative of Italian craftsmanship and the professionalisation of the modern menswear industry.
Design ethos
Meticulous craftsmanship and a focus on fluid silhouettes define the approach established by Savini, which famously prioritised the 'Roman Style'. This aesthetic moved away from the rigid, heavy structures of traditional English tailoring in favour of lighter constructions that emphasised movement and natural elegance. By introducing a slimmer fit and softer shoulders, the work provided a modernised vision of masculinity that balanced formality with ease.
The 1960s 'Peacock Revolution' saw the integration of bold colours, psychedelic patterns, and non-traditional textiles into the menswear vocabulary. Savini championed the use of silk, mohair, and other high-quality materials, often treating garments with a sense of theatricality that challenged conservative norms. Despite this flair for the dramatic, the output remained grounded in the principles of bespoke tailoring, ensuring that even the most innovative designs maintained a standard of handmade excellence and 'seasonless' luxury.
