Introduction
Jean Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer who established his eponymous label in Paris in 1976 after workplace training at Pierre Cardin, Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou. He had no formal fashion-school education; drawing, magazines, cinema and couture-studio practice formed his early method. Francis Menuge helped organise the first independent collection and later co-founded the house company with him.
Across women’s ready-to-wear, menswear and Gaultier Paris haute couture, Gaultier recast corsetry, sailor dress, denim, workwear and historic tailoring around changing ideas of gender and the body. His work extended into costume for dance, music and film, including Régine Chopinot’s productions, Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour and The Fifth Element. From 2003 to 2010 he also designed Hermès women’s ready-to-wear.
Gaultier ended his own runway authorship with the house’s Spring/Summer 2020 couture show. He subsequently remained visible as founder and guest selector during the rotating couture programme, which ended when Duran Lantink became the house’s permanent creative director in 2025.
Design ethos
Gaultier’s practice begins with the social coding of garments. He turns underwear into outerwear, gives skirts and corseted structures to male bodies, and redirects uniforms, tailoring and sailor clothing through drape, wrapping, exposure and exaggeration. A garment’s construction is often made visible so that its effect on posture, silhouette and gender can be read directly.
His collections combine couture technique with street observation, performance and popular image culture. Knitwear, tattoo mesh, denim, pinstriping, feathers and industrial surfaces move between parody and exacting craft. Historical references are rarely treated as fixed costume; they are mixed, enlarged or displaced into new bodily and cultural contexts.
Casting and collaboration are part of the design method. Models outside conventional runway standards, musicians, dancers and actors helped build a broader image of beauty, while costume projects tested the same silhouettes under movement, character and mass spectatorship.
