Introduction
Jenny Meirens was a foundational figure in Belgian fashion and the co-founder of Maison Martin Margiela. Serving as the strategic and creative partner to Martin Margiela, she was the architect of the brand's business model and its radical stance on anonymity. Before the house's inception in 1988, Meirens was already a prominent figure in Brussels as a boutique owner, championing avant-garde designers and fostering a culture of creative independence.
Her role was essential in protecting the brand's conceptual integrity and its refusal to engage with traditional celebrity-driven marketing. Meirens is recognised for her vision in creating an environment where the garment could speak for itself, away from the influence of the designer's personal image. Her death in 2017 marked the loss of one of fashion's most influential behind-the-scenes visionaries, whose commitment to radical transparency and deconstruction helped redefine the industry's values.
Design ethos
A radical rejection of the traditional fashion system served as the foundational design ethos for Jenny Meirens, who collaborated with Martin Margiela to create a house based on conceptual integrity. Her thinking was most clearly manifest in the 'blank white label' and the decision for the creative team to remain faceless. This approach prioritised the garment over the celebrity of the designer, fostering a culture of deconstruction and institutional critique. The primary concern was the honesty of the product, with a focus on revealing the mechanics of construction rather than concealing them.
Materiality was handled with a sense of experimentation and reuse, reflecting a broader interest in the lifecycle of objects. The treatment of the body was often unconventional, utilizing oversized proportions and anatomical distortions to challenge standard notions of beauty. By fostering a collective creative identity, Meirens ensured that the work remained focused on intellectual and aesthetic innovation.
