Overview
Maison Margiela was founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and business partner Jenny Meirens. Known for its avant‑garde sensibility, the house introduced deconstructed tailoring, exposed seams and anonymity through its signature four‑stitch label and collective approach. Margiela’s conceptual designs challenged fashion conventions and influenced a generation of designers.
In 2002 the company became part of Italy’s OTB Group, enabling expansion into ready‑to‑wear, accessories, fragrance and the haute couture Artisanal line.
After Margiela’s departure in 2009, British designer John Galliano was appointed creative director in 2014. Under his direction the house continues to explore themes of deconstruction, gender fluidity and memory while introducing new silhouettes and narrative-driven shows. Maison Margiela operates boutiques worldwide and remains revered for its intellectual approach and artisanal craftsmanship.
Philosophy
Maison Margiela’s philosophy is defined by non‑conformity and the art of meaning. The house treats fashion as a medium for dialogue rather than a cult of personality, revealing construction details and reworking vintage garments to question traditional notions of luxury. Its designs embrace imperfection and encourage the wearer to engage with clothing as a form of expression.
This ethos continues under John Galliano, who blends theatrical storytelling with the brand’s deconstructivist codes. The studio emphasises anonymity and collective authorship, valuing artisanal techniques and sustainable practices. Each collection seeks to provoke thought and broaden the definition of beauty.
