Introduction
Lutz Huelle is a German fashion designer based in Paris. Born in Remscheid in 1966, he graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1995 and joined Maison Martin Margiela, where he worked as a senior designer until 1998. In 2000, he co-founded his eponymous label with David Ballu.
Huelle has maintained that independent practice alongside long consultancies and house appointments. His professional record includes Max Mara Fashion Group, NEXY.CO and NAERSI within Eeka Fashion Group, Brioni, and Delpozo, where he served as artistic director from late 2018 to 2020.
From 2022, he collaborated with AZ Factory through its guest-designer platform. His parallel academic career includes long-running teaching at Central Saint Martins and leadership of the Fashion Design, Jewellery and Accessory Design Department at HEAD – Genève from 2021.
Design ethos
Huelle describes his method through decontextualisation: familiar garments are removed from their expected setting and recombined through changes in cut, volume, material and use. Sportswear can absorb eveningwear, menswear can enter womenswear, and ordinary wardrobe pieces can acquire the constructional charge of couture.
Hybridisation is central to the work. Tailoring, denim, bombers, draped dresses and technical outerwear are spliced or layered without losing their practical identity, producing clothes that remain recognisable while resisting a single category or social code.
The resulting design language values wearability without treating it as neutrality. Structure and proportion create difference, but the garment is still intended to be lived in; experimentation is tested against movement, repetition and the realities of an everyday wardrobe.

Career history
2022
Lutz Huelle began collaborating with AZ Factory through AZ Academy in May 2022, with the project framed as a collaboration between the house and his studio. The relationship developed into guest-designed collections that joined his wardrobe experimentation to the platform established by Alber Elbaz.
2018
Delpozo appointed Lutz Huelle artistic director in November 2018, following Josep Font’s departure. Until December 2020, he brought his hybrid construction, altered proportions and decontextualised wardrobe language into the Spanish house’s prêt-à-couture framework.
2017
Lutz Huelle served as a senior consultant to Brioni from July 2017 to July 2019. The role ran in parallel with his own label and other consultancies; the available evidence supports the consultancy but not sole authorship of individual collections.
2012
Lutz Huelle continued his Eeka Fashion Group consultancy as artistic director and consultant to NAERSI from October 2012 to July 2018. The entry records the institutional relationship while avoiding unsupported claims of sole seasonal authorship.
2008
Within his artistic-direction consultancy for Eeka Fashion Group, Lutz Huelle worked with NEXY.CO from October 2008 to July 2012. The record follows the dates and title stated in his professional profile without extending attribution to individual collections.
2000
Lutz Huelle worked as a senior consultant through Max Mara Fashion Group from July 2000 to July 2020. The available professional record does not assign him sole authorship of a named line, so this entry is limited to the long-running consultancy.
2000
Lutz Huelle co-founded his eponymous Paris label with David Ballu in 2000. The label became the principal vehicle for his decontextualised approach to wardrobe design, joining sportswear, tailoring, eveningwear and denim through altered structure and proportion.
1995
Lutz Huelle joined Maison Martin Margiela after graduating from Central Saint Martins and worked in the small Paris studio for three years. The experience linked garment alteration, everyday dress and collective work to the independent practice he launched in 2000.
