Introduction
John Galliano is a British-Gibraltarian designer known for narrative collection building, bias cutting and historically informed dressmaking. After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 1984, he developed an independent London and Paris practice, became Givenchy’s designer in 1995 and moved to Christian Dior in October 1996. His first Dior haute couture show was presented on 20 January 1997 and his first women’s ready-to-wear show followed on 11 March.
Galliano’s Dior remit extended beyond runway clothes into advertising, accessories and the alignment of licensed categories, while Dior Homme remained under separate designers. The system depended on studio figures including Bill Gaytten and Steven Robinson and recurring collaborators such as Pat McGrath, Stephen Jones, Jeremy Healy and Michael Howells. Dior suspended Galliano on 25 February 2011 and dismissed him on 1 March, before the later criminal judgment. He subsequently led Maison Margiela from 2014 to 2024.
Design ethos
Galliano builds collections through character, research and the behaviour of fabric. Bias cutting, corsetry, drape and historical dress alter posture, while casting, makeup, millinery, music and set design turn the runway into part of the garment’s meaning. The method is collaborative even when public attention concentrates on the designer.
At Dior, couture technique was connected to a large commercial image system. Theatrical collections could feed accessories, campaigns and retail without making those categories identical, and precise cutting held together references that ranged across periods and geographies. Later at Maison Margiela, visible construction, recovered materials and décortiqué redirected the same technical interest towards the evidence of making.

2026
Zara announced a two-year creative partnership with John Galliano to “re-author” Zara’s archive. The first collection is scheduled to arrive in September 2026.
2025
Christian Louboutin and Maison Margiela released two linked footwear capsules in March 2025. Each house revised the other’s most recognisable sign: the Tabi moved through Louboutin’s forms, while Maison constructions took on the red sole in a deliberately reciprocal exchange.
2024
Maison Margiela announced the end of John Galliano’s ten-year tenure on 11 December 2024. His final runway collection had been the Spring/Summer 2024 Artisanal presentation beneath Pont Alexandre III, closing a period that made couture, film and live performance the house’s principal image-making laboratory.
2023
Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster began a continuing eyewear collaboration in 2023. Shielded lenses, wrapped profiles and sculpted frames expanded Line 8 through concealment and altered proportion, with successive chapters treating the frame as both facial architecture and fashion object.
2022
Fine jewellery was assigned Line 12 in 2022, adding a specialist category for precious material, casting and displaced scale. Familiar objects and bodily details could now be reconsidered through a permanent jewellery structure within the numbered house architecture.
2020
Recicla launched through the Autumn/Winter 2020 Co-Ed collection as a programme for selected vintage garments and accessories. Each object was restored and reworked as a limited piece while retaining its provenance, extending Replica from reproduction into the direct recirculation of existing clothing.
2020
Maison Margiela and Reebok joined the Instapump Fury to the split-toe Tabi in 2020. The hybrid placed one of the house’s oldest forms inside a widely recognised technical sneaker, preserving the inflated upper while changing the shoe’s stance, toe and cultural register.
2015
John Galliano presented his first collection for the house to a small audience in London on 12 January 2015. Beginning with Artisanal placed reconstruction and atelier work at the centre of his mandate, while his drape, character studies and historical references opened a new named-author period.
2014
John Galliano directed Maison Margiela from October 2014 to December 2024. He made Artisanal the principal couture and image-making laboratory, then translated its methods into Co-Ed ready-to-wear, Icons, Recicla, film and live performance.
2011
Dior dismissed John Galliano on 1 March 2011 after suspending him on 25 February. The corporate action preceded the criminal judgment later that year and opened a prolonged vacancy in women’s creative leadership.
1996
John Galliano moved from Givenchy to Dior in October 1996 and led women’s haute couture, ready-to-wear and a wider image system. Dior dismissed him on 1 March 2011; Dior Homme remained under separate leadership throughout the tenure.
1995
John Galliano was announced as Hubert de Givenchy’s successor in July 1995 and produced four women’s couture and ready-to-wear collections. He moved to Dior in October 1996, with his final ready-to-wear season overlapping Alexander McQueen’s first Givenchy couture collection.
