Introduction
Patrick Scallon is an Irish fashion communications and image strategist whose career is closely connected to Maison Martin Margiela and Dries Van Noten. He joined Maison Martin Margiela in 1993 and worked in successive art-direction and communications roles through 2008, developing the house’s iconography, press systems and distinctive public language during its formative period.
Scallon moved to Dries Van Noten in 2008 as director of communications. His remit covered global communications and image strategy, fashion shows, exhibitions and cultural projects, including the 2014 Inspirations exhibition at Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the 2017 documentary Dries.
Since leaving the house in early 2022, he has worked independently across fashion, art and culture, advising artistic directors, brands and institutions on strategy, creative content, image and reputation. In 2019, the French Ministry of Culture appointed him a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
Design ethos
Scallon treats communications as part of a house’s authorship rather than as publicity added after the clothes are made. Press relations, invitations, show production, exhibitions, publications and film can establish a coherent institutional voice while protecting the specific working culture of the designer and studio.
At Maison Martin Margiela, this meant supporting anonymity, collective address and a refusal of conventional luxury promotion without allowing the house to become illegible. At Dries Van Noten, the method expanded into long-form image building through exhibitions, cultural partnerships and documentary work.
The approach is based on continuity and selective visibility. Instead of maximising exposure, it uses context, timing and medium to build recognition around the work, the house and its cultural references.
