Overview
Dries Van Noten was established in 1986 in Antwerp, Belgium by Dries Van Noten and Christine Mathys. Dries Van Noten is the definitive master of the 'intellectual-bohemian' aesthetic, a founding member of the Antwerp Six who transformed the global perception of Belgian design in the 1980s. From his base in Antwerp, Van Noten has spent four decades developing a world-known reputation for his sophisticated use of global textiles, complex embroidery, and an unparalleled mastery of the printed surface.
Based in Antwerp but part of the Puig group since 2018, the house occupies a unique position at the intersection of artisanal excellence and cultural depth. Recurring signatures include embroidery. Creative direction is currently led by Julian Klausner. The house is part of Puig (majority stake). The brand’s authority is anchored in its independent spirit and its commitment to a consistent visual language that eschews the speed of the mainstream industry. That structure has helped preserve an authorial identity as the label has developed.
Philosophy
The clashing of cultural codes serves as the primary engine of the design process, where the discipline of the tailored cut is used to anchor a riot of global prints and textures. The studio treats each collection as a painterly exercise, using custom-developed fabrics and intricate hand-detailing to express themes of nature, cinema, and fine art.
The interplay of rigorous tailoring and expressive, often multi-layered, prints governs the creative language of the house. Design signals include the use of custom-developed fabrics, intricate hand-detailing, and silhouettes that emphasise the natural lines of the body. This approach sees the construction process as an act of storytelling, where every seam and fold is intended to express a sense of protective strength and agency. By centring the forms of those often excluded from the traditional fashion narrative, the philosophy promotes a version of dress that is both radical and artisanal, advocating for a future where fashion is a tool for individual transformation and the celebration of the enduring power of the artisanal gesture.
