Introduction
Jonny Johansson is the Swedish Creative Director and co-founder of Acne Studios, a multidisciplinary fashion house based in Stockholm. Originally a musician, Johansson transitioned into fashion in 1996 as part of the ACNE creative collective, gaining immediate attention for a limited run of 100 pairs of raw denim jeans with distinctive red stitching. Under his direction, what began as a niche project has evolved into an influential global luxury brand spanning fashion, publishing, and exhibitions.
Johansson's leadership is defined by a refusal to follow traditional fashion trends, instead opting for a model that integrates art, photography, and architecture. This approach has placed Acne Studios at the forefront of contemporary luxury, known for its intellectual yet accessible contribution to the global sartorial landscape.
Design ethos
The design approach is rooted in a philosophy of 'Maximalist Minimalism,' where clean lines and reduced structures are frequently disrupted by idiosyncratic colours and exaggerated proportions. This tension is explored through the juxtaposition of disparate materials, such as heavy raw denim paired with delicate silks or industrial textures. A significant focus is placed on oversized tailoring and the subversion of classic silhouettes, often incorporating subcultural references from music and photography.
Innovation is driven by the 'Ambition to Create Novel Expressions,' leading to the development of custom fabrics and unexpected silhouettes that challenge conventional beauty standards. The work prioritises the collision of influences, blending Swedish functionalism with a high-concept art aesthetic. By maintaining a multidisciplinary perspective, the collections explore the relationship between the human form and experimental volumes, resulting in a visual language that is both avant-garde and wearable.
