Overview
Founded in Stockholm in 1996 by Jonny Johansson and a creative collective, Acne Studios began as a multidisciplinary project titled 'Ambition to Create Novel Expressions'. The brand rose to prominence following a limited run of unisex denim with signature red stitching, which quickly established its cult status. This success allowed the studio to expand into a full ready-to-wear house, encompassing accessories, footwear, furniture, and the publication Acne Paper. The label works across ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories, and denim. Recurring signatures include denim.
The house is part of Independent; minority stake by IDG Capital & I. T Group. The house is distinguished by its role as a cultural platform, merging fashion with photography and architecture under Johansson’s ongoing direction. Based in a brutalist former embassy, the brand maintains an independent spirit, characterised by its ability to pair minimalist Scandinavian roots with high-concept experimentation. Its global trajectory has seen it transition from a niche Swedish label to a major presence on the Paris calendar, recognised for its intellectual and often idiosyncratic aesthetic.
Philosophy
Progressive creativity and a multidisciplinary worldview serve as the foundation of the house’s creative language, where fashion is treated as one part of a broader artistic dialogue. Design decisions are frequently driven by the juxtaposition of clashing materials, such as technical synthetics paired with traditional wools or custom-developed leathers. This results in an aesthetic of 'minimalist eccentricity', where simple silhouettes are disrupted by unexpected textures and oversized proportions.
Recurring themes include an interrogation of gender-fluid dress codes and a commitment to material innovation over transient trends. The work often features meticulous tailoring and an emphasis on layering, encouraging a personal and experimental engagement with the wardrobe. By treating each collection as a research-led project, the studio maintains an atmosphere of constant discovery, ensuring that its output remains both intellectually challenging and visually distinct within the luxury landscape. Material choice and construction are treated as part of the argument, not as secondary finishing touches.
