Keita Ogawa

Keita Ogawa entered fashion through leather retail and later moved into production. In 1998 he joined United Arrows as a Chrome Hearts sales assistant, becoming manager of the Aoyama store in 2001. Working around leather goods sharpened his interest in the material itself and led him towards the techniques behind cutting, tanning, dyeing and construction.

Ogawa joined BACKLASH Inc. in 2004 after meeting Isamu Katayama. During the label’s early international expansion he worked inside its leather-development system and participated in material work with tanneries in Japan and abroad. The experience placed him inside the processing culture behind BACKLASH’s garment-dyed jackets and accessories as the brand expanded its European exhibition and wholesale network.

In 2009 Ogawa left BACKLASH, founded incarnation and moved his base to Florence. The new label developed clothing, footwear and accessories through a combination of Japanese leather-processing knowledge and Tuscan tannery practice, including work around Guidi. By January 2010 incarnation was presenting an Autumn/Winter collection in Florence and Paris, establishing Ogawa as an independent designer within the European artisanal fashion circuit.

Ogawa treats leather as a structural and expressive material whose grain, tension and finishing can shape the garment itself. His BACKLASH years immersed him in tanning, dyeing and post-construction treatment; incarnation carried that technical concentration into an Italian production context and gave it a distinct authorial language.

At incarnation, Japanese processing knowledge meets Tuscan leather expertise across jackets, trousers, footwear and accessories. Grain, irregularity, stitching and the movement of the hide remain visible, and finishing techniques participate directly in construction and proportion. The material retains its individual character as it is cut, assembled and worn.

Ogawa’s career traces a clear transfer of craft knowledge between Tokyo and Florence. BACKLASH provided an intensive environment for leather development, and incarnation turned that experience into a separate system of proportions, treatments and product design grounded in the Italian tannery tradition.
