Jean-Léon-Victor “Léon” Revillon

Jean-Léon-Victor “Léon” Revillon (1843–1915) was a French fur merchant and one of the principal organisers of Revillon Frères during its transformation into an international business. He entered the family house as a partner in 1869 and became closely associated with expansion beyond Paris, particularly the development of operations in Britain and the United States.

Revillon’s overseas presence evolved through several legal forms and dates. Commercial activity in London and New York preceded some of the formal subsidiary and branch structures credited to Léon, whose role encompassed international trade, market organisation and board leadership. Leipzig joined the network as a major buying centre, while the American business grew into a significant retail and wholesale operation.

By the early twentieth century Léon remained part of a family leadership operating across manufacture, sourcing and international distribution. He later chaired the board and was also active in professional and statistical circles. His death in 1915 came during the wartime rupture that disrupted Revillon’s European and overseas system.

Léon Revillon’s contribution was organisational. He treated the fur business as an international chain linking purchase, transport, preparation, manufacture and sale, building channels in markets where raw pelts and finished fashion circulated through different commercial systems. That scale gave the Paris house access to wider material supplies and customers.

His professional interests also included trade organisation and statistical information, reflecting an executive culture attentive to markets as well as merchandise. The garments of his period remain attributed to Revillon Frères and its workshops; no secure individual design authorship belongs to Léon himself. His influence is clearest in the infrastructure that allowed those workshops to operate at international scale.
