Louis-Victor Révillon

Louis-Victor Révillon (1806–1873) was a French furrier and merchant whose name became the basis of the nineteenth-century Revillon house. Later house histories date his acquisition of Maison Givelet to 1839, after earlier work in the Paris fur trade. The Revillon–Jancke commercial name is directly documented by the 1850s, and Révillon is identified as a merchant furrier at 81 rue de Rivoli in 1857.

During his lifetime the business moved from a family fur trade towards a larger manufacture of made-up furs. The public style Revillon-Jancke remained in use through the 1860s, while the next generation entered the company and developed the structure that would become Revillon Frères. By 1876, shortly after Révillon’s death, the Revillon Frères name was established in official exhibition material at 79–81 rue de Rivoli.

Révillon’s historical position is therefore tied to the formation of the Revillon-named enterprise in nineteenth-century Paris. The later claim of an uninterrupted Revillon foundation in 1723 belongs to the retrospective lineage of Maison Givelet and predates the documented appearance of the Revillon name by more than a century.

Révillon’s working world joined fur buying, merchant knowledge and the manufacture of finished goods. His public identity was that of a marchand fourreur: a specialist dealing with the quality, value and preparation of pelts while expanding the commercial scope of finished fur clothing. The house’s later industrial scale grew from this combination of material expertise and organised trade.

The surviving nineteenth-century chronology attributes garment authorship to the house, not to Révillon personally. His contribution sits in the operating structure that allowed specialist fur craft to become a recognisable Paris fashion business: a stable rue de Rivoli address, a family succession, broader manufacture and a name that the next generation could carry into international markets.
